In 2007 I started a series  of photographs, where I shot a photo of my children, Rockwell 1 yr and Violet 5yrs. I had 1 camera upstairs and 1 downstairs, and took one everywhere we went. The kids went from not being totally aware of the camera and thinking of it as a game, to playing along with me for the camera, to becoming fully aware of the camera. I stopped in aprox 2023, because they had slowly become sick of me following them around! This photograph of Rockwell really shows him unaware and off in his own world, lying back on my lap with the dog just carefree in the background. These photographs mean more to mean then anything else I've ever shot in my career. They were done all along for my children, so they will see how I saw them. My vision of them will become their memories of our life together.  
The photos are my greatest gift to them, when I am no longer here to tell the stories, the photographs will.

For over a year Melanie traveled the globe from China to Tangier to photograph her book for Random House/Clarkson Potter called The Authentics. The book is deep dive into the lives of creative trailblazers in art, design, and fashion, which became a #1 best seller in the design world. And she collaborated with DwellStudio founder Christiane Lemieux on the book Undecorate: The No-Rules Approach to Interior Design.

Melanie lives in the beach town of Sea Cliff, New York, with her family: husband Richard,
daughter Violet, son Rockwell, their dogs, Squirrel and Strawberry and cats, Mrs Biggelsworth and Mouse. In 2010 she embarked on a personal project to photograph her children every week for a year. Though the year has long since passed, the project, “Another 52 Weeks,” is still going strong. “Since memories fade, my images will be a part of their memories—my gift to them,” she says.
